Valdis Jākobsons selected as Honorary Patron of the 13th Congress of the Association of European Medicine History Museums

08/08/2004

This important international congress will take place in Rīga in 2006, at the Paulis Stradiņš Medicine History Museum and it will be attended by more than 150 delegates from all over the world. The congress delegates will discuss issues related to the history of medicine, will be introduced to Latvian and Rīga as well as visiting the largest pharmaceutical manufacturer in the Baltic States, Grindeks.

On August 3, in preparation for the 13th Congress of the Association of European Medicine History Museums, Grindeks Chairman of the Board, Valdis Jākobsons met with the joint chairmen of the aforementioned Congress – academics Jānis Stradiņš and Professor Kārlis Ēriks Arons, Director of the Paulis Stradiņš Medicine History Museum.

During the meeting, several issues related to the organisation of the congress were reviewed, and, taking into account Grindeks’ contribution to the history of the development of pharmacy and medicine, Grindeks Chairman of the Board, Valdis Jākobsons was elected as the Honorary Patron of the Congress.

It should be noted that the congress in Rīga is due to take place during the anniversary year of the first natural scientist of Latvian origin, Professor Dāvids Hieronīms Grindelis (1776– 1836). Grindelis’ name was the inspiration for the selection of the Grindeks’ company name. Moreover, in 1995, the company established its highest award – the Grindelis Medal.

Grindeks is a long-standing co-operation partner of the Paulis Stradiņš Museum (www.mvm.lv) both in terms of organising exhibitions, as well as reflecting the history of the development of contemporary pharmacy and medicine in the form of a permanent exhibition.
