What is Asthenia and How to Recognize it?

19/08/2022

Fatigue after a hard day or a difficult task is quite a natural and completely normal thing, because an organism, having spent energy, needs to recuperate. With regular full-fledged activity, the state of tiredness in the evening is the norm, as well as the norm is to wake up rested and vigorous, and after a vacation to feel uplifted and inspired. However, there are disorders which successfully masquerade as the fatigue, depriving a body of the normal recovery. And the first in the list of such diseases is asthenia.

Asthenia is a rather insidious psychosomatic disease which often looks like the constant tiredness and decline of strength. Sometimes manifestations of the asthenia are similar to an onset of flu – the temperature may rise, there appears photophobia and sensitivity to harsh sounds, unreasonable drowsiness and loss of appetite. But, unlike a viral infection, the symptoms last longer, and bed rest does not help.

Asthenia may be accompanied by increased anxiety, rapid palpitations, tiredness even after short periods of moderate activity, shortness of breath during any vigorous activity, dizziness. It is curious that usual tests, an examination by a therapist and a cardiologist state that the person shall be healthy, and there are no physiological grounds for the emerging states.
An important sign of the asthenia, which helps to distinguish the disease from the ordinary tiredness or infection, is that the rest does not bring relief. Interest in favorite things is lost, a desire to move, study, work, and communicate disappears. Frequently, the asthenia is accompanied by depression, and shall be treated, respectively, by complex methods: drug therapy shall be combined with psychotherapy, in some cases, hospitalization shall be indicated.

Just Constant Tiredness

Unlike the asthenia, which is a disease and shall be treated under supervision of specialists, the ordinary fatigue shall be treated with rest. Although, in some cases, just getting enough sleep is not enough. Such situations often occur:

  • with an irregular work schedule;
  • when working under conditions of constant stress;
  • during shift work, especially in 1/3 and 12/48 mode, when sleep and wakefulness pattern is disturbed;
  • when workload is too high, for example, when full-time study at an evening department is added to work, or the need to communicate with children, to serve everyday life;
  • during long-term work without holidays and days off;
  • with malnutrition.

In such situations, there is no the asthenia as such yet, but the constant tiredness and lack of rest begin to create conditions for its development. Therefore, it is important to combat with the constant tiredness in order to prevent the onset of the disease.

Organization of Recreation Which will Help

To relieve the fatigue, a person needs simple, but guaranteed affordable things: sleep, qualitative food, an opportunity to do what you want, the right not to make important decisions for some time, conditions for delegating a part of the responsibility. In other words, You need:

  1. to equalize a sleep pattern;
  2. to adjust a diet and balance a diet;
  3. to distribute responsibility for household chores among all family members;
  4. to set aside time for your own affairs, not related to work and family;
  5. to regularly organize a vacation and really relax in it, without solving important issues.

The correct attitude to one’s own organism and its resources shall create conditions under which the tiredness is a natural consequence of productive work, and a burst of energy is a natural incentive to start a task. In people with the asthenia, reaching a harmonious ratio of activity and relaxation sometimes takes many years. For those who are just too tired, a few weeks shall be enough to build a really healthy rhythm of work and rest.
