On December 20, at a festive gathering held at the Latvian National Opera House, the Latvian Academy of Sciences and pharmaceutical manufacturer Grindeks presented awards to the best Latvian scientists. Awards and cash prizes in the amount of 1000 lats were received by three notable Latvian scientists, and four young scientists received cash prizes in the amount of 250 lats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Awards in the amount of 1,000 lats and the \u2018Golden Owl\u2019, a badge of honour created by J\u0101nis Strupulis that is presented for a lifetime\u2019s contribution to the development of science were received by \u2013 LAS member Em\u012blija Gudriniece, LAS member R\u016bsi\u0146\u0161 M\u0101rti\u0146\u0161 Freivalds and LAS honorary member P\u0113teris Gu\u013c\u0101ns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Recognised this year as being the best young Latvian scientists were Agrita Puzuka from the LU\u2019s Biomedicine Research and Study Centre, Tatjana Bogu\u010darska from the RTU\u2019s Biomedicine Engineering-Sciences Nan technology Institute, Ilze Bold\u0101ne from LU\u2019s Latvian History Institute and Edmunds Sven\u010ds from the National Defence Academy. These young scientists received the \u2018Silver Owl\u2019 badge of honour, diplomas and cash prizes in the amount of 250lats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This year\u2019s science award winner P\u0113teris Gu\u013c\u0101ns noted that he considered the science award he\u2019d received not only to be recognition for himself and his work but also for the entire research area of current economic problems that he represents. \u201cThe world is changing, and as a result there needs to be a change in all economic thinking, which is why in researching current economic problems we endeavour to change this thinking. The award not only provides support for me personally, but for the sector as a whole\u201d, acknowledged P\u0113teris Gu\u013c\u0101ns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For her part, young scientist Agrita Puzuka admitted that: \u201cI feel honoured that my work has been appreciated. I am extremely pleased and honoured to receive the Grindeks and LAS Science Award.\u201d The scientist added that often a person has difficulty in evaluating the fruits of his or her labours, therefore it is important to receive this recognition from one\u2019s peers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Annual Award for Science was presented for the sixth time. This tradition was initiated on June 4, 1998 when LAS President J\u0101nis Stradi\u0146\u0161 and Grindeks\u2019 Chairman of the Board, Valdis J\u0101kobsons signed an agreement regarding co-operation and annual awards and cash prizes for science. The costs of the cash prizes are provided for financially by PJSC Grindeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Among those participating at the festive ceremony were the Latvian Minister for Education and Science, K\u0101rlis \u0160adurskis, Latvian Academy of Sciences President, J\u0101nis Stradi\u0146\u0161, PJSC Grindeks Chairman of the Board, Valdis J\u0101kobsons and others.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
